Contribution to a dendroclimatological study of Pinus brutia Ten. in the area of Anopolis, South West Crete, Greece

Pinus brutia Ten. is a typical Mediterraneo-oriental species. The ecological analysis at a biogeographical scale have confirmed the plasticity of this forest species. In Crete, it naturally grows and constitute some extensive forests in the south, particularly in the area of Sphakia (the south-west), from sea level up to 1.200 m. Within this area, three pine populations were sampled around Anopolis according to an altitudinal transect (10 trees per population, 2 cores per tree). The width of the annual growth rings was measured by scanning the cores through a high resolution optical scanner. The obtained images were then processed through a computer software called WinDendro (TM) V. 6.1 D. Numerical data were saved in a WinDendro file and were at the origin of all the later analysis. The raw data and ring-width indices were used to build the individual and master chronologies
