Biolog - a new system for determination of phytopathogenic and other gram negative bacteria

Different methods can be used for identification of bacteria. The answer on the question if a plant is infected with a certain bacteria can be obtained by the use of rapid methods, specific for the concerned organism, for example targeted immunological tests or nucleic acid analysis. In search for the answer on the question which organism is present in a sample more general methods must be used. For testing larger quantities of samples analysis of fatty acid profil can be used, but expensive equipment and specialised personal is needed. Traditional methods are less expensive, but they are laborious and time-consuming. New approach developed by Biolog Inc. is speeding, simplifying and standardizing the classic processes of metabolic characterization of isolates. Single samples of different plants with symptoms that can be caused by a variety of bacteria are often received at the Agricultural institute of Slovenia. Since most of the phytopathogenic bacteria are Gram negative the Biolog GN system facilitates identification of these bacteria. Introducing the system in the last year phytopathogenic bacteria mostly from the genuses Agrobacterium and Xanthomonas were determined. The system is also suitable for identification of Gram negative bacteria isolated from other sources like surfaces of healthy plants, from animals and humans, from water or soil.
