Degrees of contamination of soils in Poland with heavy metals
2002
Mocek, A. (Akademia Rolnicza, Poznan (Poland))
The study presents concentrations of several heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Pb, Ni, Cd) in arable soils in Poland (approximately 48.5 thousand samples). It was found that mean concentrations of the examined metals were distinctly lower than those of limiting (acceptable) values for soils in many regions of the world. Approximately 97 percent of Polish soils were characterized by natural (0 degree) or elevated (I degree) concentrations of heavy metals and only 3 percent were classified as soils with high (II-V degree) heavy metal content. Therefore, opinions frequently found in mass media - both in Poland and abroad - concerning allegedly strong heavy metals contamination of soils in Poland failed to materialize
