Since 1998 the forest administration of Lower Saxony takes part in the international EU-LIFE-project: "Demonstration of Methods to Monitor Sustainable Forestry". This paper reports on the present working state of the project in the demonstration areas Solling and Lueneburger Heide. Up to now the pan-European catalogue of criteria and indicators was analyzed and completed, the current monitoring methods were considered, adapted and completed, the inventory data were assembled in an information system, and a target system was developed to assess conditions and developments. In first line it is the aim of the German sub-project to embody appropriately the aspects of a multifunctional forestry in the EU-LIFE-project.
