Effect of mulching on growth and yield of sweet pepper grown in Igolomia tunnel

The study investigated the effect of white and black polyethylene mulches on the microclimate in Igolomia tunnels and on sweet pepper growth and yield. Plants were transplanted in the first decade of May and fruit was picked up over the physiological maturity. Temperature taken at 8.00 am showed that heat accumulation in soil was greater under the black mulch. As for unmulched soil, the temperature was 0.5 deg C higher on average, although the differences sometimes reached 1.5-2.0 deg C. Under white mulch the soil temperature was lower than that of unmulched soil by an average of 0.5 deg C. White mulch resulted in a 187 percent increase in reflected PAR, as compared with unmulched soil in the tunnel.
