Impact of physical propeties of rock wool on sweet pepper fruit yield and its quality

The investigation included laboratory and field tests with new and reused rock wool of horizontal (H) and vertical (V) fibre arrangement and available bulk density (ABD) of 0.1, 0.7 and 0.04 g/cubic cm. The most favourable and stable physical properties were found in rock wool with horizontal fibres and ABD of 0.7 g/cubic cm and 0.1 g/cubic cm. Enhanced physical properties for ABD 0.04 g/cubic cm were recorded when rock wool was used for the second time. The "Bendigo F1" sweet pepper yield and fruit quality were mostly influenced by the wet rock wool bulk density and water capcity. The highest early and marketable yields were obtained from rock wool whose field bulk density was 0.04 g/cubic cm for horizontal fibres and ABD of 0.7 g/cubic cm (H-0.07) and 0.1 g/cubic cm (H-0.1). The highest fresh weight of 1st class fruit (150 g) coincided with the second cultivation cycle for the horizontal-fibre rock wool whose ABD was 0.04 g/cubic cm (H-0.04), which also coincided with the thickest fruit wall (8 mm). Dry matter, total sugar and vitamin C contents were higher, while the nitrates - lower in fruit for reused rock wool
