Proline-rich polypeptide complex from ovine colostrum - immunomodulatory properties and possibility of Alzheimer's disease treatment

Proline-rich polypeptide complex (PRP) is presented in colostrum collected in the early period of lactation (about 6 h after the delivery) in amount of 100-400 mg/l. Reports on inhibitory activity of IFN-gamma and TNF-alpha on beta amyloid plaques formation prompted us to performe clinical trials on application of PRP complex in a form of tablets called Colostrinin to patients with Alzheimer's disease. In a double-blind placebo-controlled one-year trial not only stabilization but improvement of the cognitive and behavioral abilities of patients was observed. Colostrinin therapy was found to be more effective in patients at the initial stages of disease. Colostrinin was found to be a remarkably safe drug, only mild and transient side effect were observed. Beneficial effects were confirmed in the open study. Colostrinin treatment may represent a new approach to the therapy of Alzheimer's disease
