Austria's timber trade and industry
2000
Binder, G.
For Austria, the particular significance of the economic factor "timber" is best expressed in the fact that forestry and the timber trade and industry provide some 250,000 jobs and, second to tourism, the export of wood products brings in the most foreign exchange. Within the last decades, the sawmill industry structure has been changed by concentrating on approximately 1,700 plants and expanding the sawn-timber production up to nearly 9 million cubic meters. Nevertheless, compared internationally, it is still too small. Italy is the primary export market. The wood-processing plants likewise export approximately 50 % of their production. Intensive advertising within the past 10 years, has increased the consumption of coniferous sawn timber in Austria from 0.35 to 0.53 cbm per capita.
