Insects vectors of phytoplasmas in Europe. Knowledge - acquisition - expectations [plant diseases]

The species of Cixiidae, Cercopidae, Cicadellidae and Psyllidae feared, reported or ascertained to be vectors of phytoplasmas in the European Union (EU), are listed together with their corresponding pathogenic agents. Of the latter, those included among the quarantine pests for Europe are indicated. Of the insect species present in Italy (1 cixiid, 1 cercopid, 14 cicadellids and 3 psyllids) biological, corological, and ecological data are reported. One cixiid and three cicadellid species not yet present in Europe, but of feared introduction for the phytoplasmas they transmit, are also recorded. Some acquisitions on biology and transmission capability of several vector cicadellids, as obtained from laboratory and field research, are given. Results are expected from the modern methods of analyses in order to ascertain if phytoplasmas showing identical or similar genetic profiles are to be considered valid and unique species, to better establish both the role and the eventual specificity or ubiquity of the insects vectors

[Sono elencate le specie di Cixiidae, Cercopidae, Cicadellidae e Psyllidae, temuti, riportati o accertati come vettori di fitoplasmi nell'Unione Europea (UE), unitamente ai loro corrispondenti agenti patogeni. Fra questi ultimi, sono indicati quelli inclusi fra i parassiti oggetto di quarantena per l'Europa. Per le specie di insetti presenti in Italia (1 cixide, 1 cercopide, 14 cicadellidi e 3 psillidi) sono riportati i dati biologici, corologici ed ecologici. Sono pure citati una specie di cixide e tre di cicadellidi non ancora presenti in Europa, ma di temuta introduzione per i fitoplasmi che trasmettono. Sono esposte anche alcune acquisizioni sulla biologia e la capacita' di trasmissione di numerosi vettori cicadellidi, ottenute tramite ricerche di laboratorio e di campo. Ci si aspettano risultati dai moderni metodi di analisi al fine di accertare se fitoplasmi mostranti profili genetici identici o simili devono essere considerati specie valide ed uniche, per stabilire meglio il ruolo e l'eventuale specificita' o ubiquita' degli insetti vettori]
