Non-sterile fermentation of wood chips - a method for pre-treatment of wood chips for fiberboard production

English. Fermentation of wood with brown rot fungi in fiberboard production could save energy during defibration, improve the hygroscopic board properties and save binding agents. In order to apply this method in practical operation, it must be ensured that the wood chips will be fermented within a short time and in a non-sterile environment. Problems arise due to moulds always present on wood chips. They inhibit growing of the brown rot fungi. To prevent this, the wood chips were treated with special fungicides. The addition of nutrients for fungi could speed up the process. Another important requirement was a suitable kind of inoculation (growing up the brown rot fungi on millet, optimal amounts and homogeneous distribution of the inoculum). By means of the previously mentioned measures it was possible to reach useful wood modifications in a period of only 1 to 2 weeks. These modifications provide energy savings of about 40% during refining of wood chips, a three times higher bending strength and more than half reduced water absorption and swelling of fiber boards.

Eine Fermentation des Holzes mit Braunfaeulepilzen kann bei der Faserplattenherstellung Energieeinsparungen, Verbesserungen der hygroskopischen Platteneigenschaften sowie Bindemitteleinsparungen bewirken. Um dieses Verfahren in diePraxis umzusetzen, muss die Fermentation der fuer die Faserplattenproduktion eingesetzten Hackschnitzel innerhalb kurzer Zeit und im unsterilen Milieu durchfuehrbar sein. Ein Problem stellen dabei auf unsterilem Holz immer vorhandene Schimmelpilze dar, welche den Fermentationsprozess inhibieren. Um dies zu verhindern, koennen die Hackschnitzel mit bestimmten Fungiziden behandelt werden. Naehrstoffzusaetze koennen den Fermentationsprozess beschleunigen. Eine weitere wichtige Voraussetzung ist eine geeigneteForm der Inokulation (Anzucht der Braunfaeulepilze auf Hirse, optimale Menge und homogene Verteilung des Inokulums). Mit diesen Massnahmen konnte das Holz innerhalb von 1-2 Wochen unsteril fermentiert und daraus Faserplatten mit folgenden Verbesserungen hergestellt werden: Reduzierung der Zerfaserungsenergie um ca. 40%, der Wasseraufnahme und Dickenquellung der Platten um ca. die Haelfte, Erhoehung der Biegefestigkeit um ca. das 3-fache.
