Forest politics after 1990 in the Czech Republic

This introducing article briefly summarizes the traditions from which Czech forestry started, points out the respective elements that influenced it in the past or brought some problems. It indicates gradual changes which have beenunder way in forestry in the Czech Republic in the last decade, relating not only to the transition from centrally-planned economy towards a market economic environment but also to the fact that the view of general public of forests is changing. Not only supply of raw materials is expected from forest, yet the enhanced pressure on the fulfilment of non-wood productive functions is put. The general principles of a new forest law are presented reflecting explicity ongoing changes and the principles ofthe last conception of forest policy adopted for the period before accession of the Czech Republic to the EU.
