Effect of zeolite as an amendment to sphagnum peat on growth and quality of ornamental pot plants

The zeolite mined in Carpathian Mountains was added to sphagnum peat at the rates: 0, 2.5, 5, 10 and 20 percent (v/v). Ficus benjamina 'Starlight', Peperomia obtusifolia 'Variegata' and Impatiens Paradise 'Pago Pago' were grown in these substrates during 6 months under glass house conditions. During first three months plants were fertigated using Peters (27-15-12), later - Peters (15-11-29). Ficus grown on media with zeolite gave the best results, independent on its rate. Peperomia and Impatiens grown on substrate with no more than 10 percent zeolite produced plants of better quality than the control. The data suggest that peat with addition of 2.5-10 percent zeolite provide good stability and the same or better results as compared to sphagnum peat
