The paper defines distinctions between the older concept of poverty and the new concept of social exclusion. It presents the dimension and characteristics of social exclusion population in Slovenia and the factors of social exclusion in the rural areas and among the rural population, which are the result of economical transition and social changes during the last ten years in Slovenia.
