The exponential increase in the number of fires and surface burnings observed in the last three to four decades constitutes a major environmental problem in the southern European Mediterranean Member States. The most significant environemntal impacts of fires are the loss of animal habitat and biodiversity, land/soil degradation and the emission of substantial amounts of greenhouse gases, An assessment of the environemntal impacts requires the collection of accurate and detailed information concerning the location, spatial extent and severity of fire damage. Moreover, accurate assessments allow forest managers to identify and target areas for intensive or special restoration. This study aims to map the spatial extent of the burned areas and to estimate the severity of fire damage on the Mediterranean island of Thasos by using post-fire LANDSAT TM and IKONOS images. Two TM images were used to map the large fires of 1985 and 1989, and one IKONOS image was used to map the smaller fire of 2000. Two image analysis techniques, namely, Intensity-Hue-Saturation transformation and Binary Logistic Regression modelling were used to map the spatial extent of the burned aresa, while Spectral Mixture Analysis and Canonical Discriminant Analysis were employed to estimate of fire damage.
