[The increase of oxidative metabolism causes a rise of feed intake in rat [nutrition physiology]]

Performance of the metabolic pathways in the production of energy and subsequent utilisation in mechanical tasks is dependent on a number of factors such as propionyl-L-carnitine, Coenzyme Q (Q10), as well as several precursors of mitochondrial coenzymes as nicotinamide, riboflavin and pantothenic acid. We recently observed that increased levels of these factors improve muscular motor performance in the rat. However, this intensified muscular activity was not due to endogenous energetic reserves. In order to verify whether increased concentrations of metabolic factors involved in energy production enhanced food assumption in the rat, we tested animals treated for 7 weeks with HS 122.1, a mixture composed as follows: propionyl-L-carnitine, Coenzyme Q, nicotinamide, riboflavin and pantothenic acid. HS 122.1 was suspended in distilled water containing carboxy-methyl-cellulose (CMC) (0.5%). 20 male rats were randomly assigned to receive by gavage, daily, either HS 122.1 (50 mg/kg) or an equivalent volume (5 ml/kg) of vehicle. No significant difference was found in body weight between the two groups of animals throughout the entire period of observation. On the contrary, food intake was significantly (P = 0.031) higher in treated animals from the fourth week of treatment. These results indicate that HS 122.1 elicits an increase of food intake, resulting in the intensification of the mitochondrial bioenergetic processes. As recently observed in the rat, the consequent increase of energy production elicits an improvement in muscle contraction
