The recently published 2001/18/EC Directive on deliberate release into the environment of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) provides a very important legislative framework for regulation of the GMOs issue in the European Union in the forthcoming years. Spreading knowledge of the contents of this Directive and outlining its main points of general interest will indubitably help the debate between consumers and producers, and this is the goal of the present paper

La pubblicazione della Direttiva 2001/18/CE riguardante l'emissione deliberata nell'ambiente di Organismi Geneticamente Modificati (OGM) costituisce un importante strumento legislativo per regolare questo tema alquanto discusso. La Direttiva risente fortemente del dibattito che si e' sviluppato sugli OGM, specialmente nell'Unione Europea, ed introduce importanti e restrittive norme a tutela della salute dei cittadini e dell'ambiente. Questo lavoro sottolinea i principali punti di interesse generale della Direttiva, analizzandone il contenuto e la sua diffusione. Lo scopo e' quello di fornire elementi di chiarezza nel dibattito tra produttori e consumatori
