Subterranean clover grazing for Friesian heifers. Effects on the growth and the onset of puberty

In order to investigate the effects of subterranean clover (SC) phytoestrogens on growth and reproduction of cattle, 26 prepubertal Friesian heifers grazed ad libitum for about 3 months on 2 different pastures: SC (Group 1) and ryegrass (control Group 2). Average phytoestrogen content of SC was 0.1735% on dry matter. The initial ages and weights were: G1 = 294.2 d +- 89.11; 253.3 kg +- 43.30; G2 = 288.4 d +- 85.20 and 249.8 kg +- 33.22, respectively. After 82 days of grazing, heifers weighed, respectively, G1 = 321.7 kg and G2 = 306.6 kg, with a slight but significant difference in favour of G1 (P=0.053); differences were more evident between average daily gains during the last month of grazing (G1 = 0.804 kg +- 0.14, G2 = 0.699 kg +- 0.11, P = 0.034). No differences were recorded on the onset of puberty. Two heifers in each group did not reach cyclic activity until 5 months after the end of the feeding trial

[Allo scopo di studiare gli effetti dei fitoestrogeni del trifoglio sotterraneo (TS) sulla crescita e la riproduzione dei bovini, e' stato effettuato il pascolamento ad libitum di 26 manze di razza Frisona in stadio prepuberale per circa 3 mesi su due pascoli diversi: TS (Gruppo 1) e loiessa (Gruppo 2 di controllo). Il contenuto medio di estrogeni del TS era pari allo 0,1735% sulla sostanza secca. Le eta' e i pesi iniziali erano pari a: G1 = 294,2 g +- 89,11 e 253,3 kg +- 43,30; G2 = 288,4 g +- 85,2 e 249,8 kg +- 33,22, rispettivamente. Dopo 82 giorni di pascolamento, le manze pesavano, rispettivamente, G1 = 321,7 kg e G2 = 306,6 Kg, con una differenza lieve ma significativa a favore di G1 (P=0,053); le differenze erano piu' evidenti fra gli incrementi medi giornalieri nel corso dell'ultimo mese di pascolamento (G1 = 0,804 kg +- 0,14, G2 = 0,699 kg +- 0,11, P = 0,034).
