Effect of cultivation method and date of harvest on the yield of basil herbs

In field experiments carried out in 1997 and 1998 four cultivation methods were compared. The plants were grown from pricking, non pricking and sowing seeds in the field with and without cover. There were two terms of harvests: pre-flowering and at the beginning of flowering. The results showed that the influence of cultivation method and harvest date were significant. The highest yield and content of essential oil was obtained for plants grown from direct sowing in the field and harvested at the beginning of flowering
