Irrigation systems in Southern Italy. Selection rules for sustainable agriculture

In hot-dry environments, where water is often lacking and limiting crop yield, the choice of crop irrigation method results a remarkable point, either for the sustainability of this practice or for the economic convenience. In this work, the main irrigation systems used in Southern Italy on herbaceous crops are described, technical characteristics, advantages and disadvantages are highlighted (lateral furrow flow, sprinkler and drip irrigation and subirrigation). The principles that the farmer has to follow in the choice of irrigation system are examined. These principles are based on farm management, crop requirements, environment (soil and climate) and water supply

Negli ambienti caldo-aridi, dove l'acqua spesso scarseggia e limita la produttivita' delle colture, la scelta del metodo irriguo diventa fondamentale, sia per la sostenibilita' di questa pratica, sia per la sua convenienza economica. In questa nota si descrivono brevemente i principali metodi irrigui diffusi su colture erbacee nelle aree del Sud Italia, evidenziandone le caratteristiche tecniche, i vantaggi e gli svantaggi. Vengono esaminati il metodo per infiltrazione laterale da solchi, quello per aspersione, quello a microportata (a goccia e a nebbia) e la subirrigazione. Vengono individuati, inoltre, i criteri che devono orientare l'operatore agricolo nella scelta del metodo irriguo. Questi criteri devono tenere conto delle caratteristiche strutturali dell'azienda, delle esigenze colturali, dell'ambiente pedoclimatico e del tipo di approvvigionamento idrico
