Evaluation of the recycling of a spent fermentation medium for starter bacteria cultures in dairy feeding [dairy cows]

English. Chemical characteristics of a spent fermentation medium (SFM), residue of a starter cultures production plant, have been evaluated. The medium had a very low DM content (4.1%). The N-NH3 was the main constituent. Detectable amounts of galactose, organic acids, amino acids and potassium were also found. The recycling of the SFM in dairy feeding was tested using four non-pregnant, non-lactating Italian Brown cows (703 +- 5 kg BW) fitted with ruminal cannulae. A diet (CP = 13.1% DM; NDF = 39.1% DM) was added either with 2 l of water (Control) or with the same amount of the medium (SFMD) and fed to the cows according to a cross over experimental design. The medium did not affect the in situ degradation pattern of meadow hay, corn meal and soybean meal. Voluntary DM intake and rumen fluid characteristics were similar between dietary treatments and therefore no probiotic activity was found for SFM under the feeding regimen adopted in the present study

Il substrato presentava un contenuto molto basso di SS (4,1%). L'N-NH3 era il costituente principale. Sono pure stati ritrovati quantitativi misurabili di galattosio, acidi organici, aminoacidi e potassio. La possibilita' di riutilizzazione del SFM nell'alimentazione dei bovini da latte e' stata verificata utilizzando quattro vacche di razza Bruna Italiana (703 +- 5 kg PV) vuote, non in lattazione, dotate di cannule ruminali. Una dieta (PG = 13,1% SS; NDF = 39,1% SS) e' stata addizionata o con 2 l di acqua (Controllo) o con la medesima quantita' di substrato (SFMD) e somministrata alle vacche secondo un disegno sperimentale incrociato. Il substrato non influenzava le modalita' di degradazione in situ di fieno di prato, farina di mais e farina di soia. L'ingestione volontaria di SS e le caratteristiche del fluido ruminale risultavano simili fra i diversi trattamenti alimentari e percio' non e' stata riscontrata alcuna attivita' probiotica di SFM nelle condizioni di regime alimentare adottato nel presente studio]
