Multiple ear effects on yield of maize varieties under tropical wet and dry season conditions [Zea mays L.]

Farmers in Trinidad and Tobago and in many other parts of the tropics usually grow maize for the green ear, neglecting the subapical ear, which may have potential to yield grain for livestock. In this study, six CIMMYT varieties, three open-pollinated (Across 9224, Across 9227 and Across 9328) and three single-cross hybrids (CML27 x CML52, CML287 x CL00331 and CML297 x CML288), were grown over two seasons (dry and wet) with two controls (a locally developed open-pollinated variety (ICTA Farm Corn) and a popularly grown hybrid (Pioneer X304)) to compare the effects of multiple-ears on grain yield. The subapical ears of the varieties Pioneer X304, CML27 x CML52, CML287 x CL00331, Across 9224 and Across 9227 made significant contributions (5.7-17.2%) to their total grain yield in the wet season. Subapical ear contributions to total grain yield appeared to be influenced by the wet season moisture supply. The significant contribution of subapical ear to total grain yield in the wet season has great potential for farmers

[Gli agricoltori di Trinidad e Tobago e di molte altre parti dei tropici di norma coltivano il mais per la spiga verde, trascurando la spiga subapicale, che puo' produrre granella per il bestiame. In questo studio, sei varieta' del CIMMYT, tre a impollinazione libera (Across 9224, Across 9227, e Across 9328) e tre ibridi a due vie (CML27 x CML52, CML287 x CL00331e CML297 x CML288), sono state coltivate in due stagioni (secca e umida) con due controlli (una varieta' a impollinazione libera ottenuta localmente e un ibrido commerciale Pioneer, X304) per confrontare gli effetti delle spighe multiple sulla resa in granella. Le spighe subapicali delle varieta' Pioneer X304, CML27 x CML52, CML287 x CL00331, Across 9224 e Across 9227 hanno dato significativi contributi (5,7-17,2%) alla produzione totale di granella nella stagione umida. I contributi della spiga subapicale alla resa in granella appaiono essere influenzati dall'umidita' nella stagione umida.
