Phytophthora nicotianae pathogenic to pepper in Northern-Western Spain [Capsicum annuum L.]

Seven strains of Phytophthora nicotianae were isolated from pepper plants (Capsicum annuum) showing collar and root rot in Northern-Western Spain and were identified using standard taxonomic criteria. The pathogenic behaviour of the isolates was studied in Capsicum annuum under greenhouse and growth chamber conditions in comparison with that of Phytophthora capsici. Differences between isolates of the two species and great variation within the strains of P. nicotianae were observed. The genetic compatibility of these strains was studied and the importance of some taxonomic criteria was considered. P. capsici isolates were all A1, while those of P. nicotianae had the A2 compatibility type. Criteria for distinguishing the two species are discussed

[Sette ceppi di Phytophthora nicotianae che presentavano marciumi a livello del colletto e della radice sono stati isolati da piante di peperone (Capsicum annuum) nella Spagna Nord-Occidentale e sono stati identificati utilizzando criteri tassonomici standard. Il comportamento patogeno degli isolati e' stato studiato in Capsicum annuum in condizioni di serra e di camera di crescita in confronto con quello di Phytophthora capsici. Sono state osservate differenze fra gli isolati delle due specie e una notevole variabilita' nell'ambito dei ceppi di P. nicotianae. E' stata studiata la compatibilita' genetica di questi ceppi ed e' stata considerata l'importanza di alcuni criteri tassonomici. Gli isolati di P. capsici erano tutti A1, mentre quelli di P. nicotianae avevano il tipo di compatibilita' A2. Sono discussi i criteri per distinguere le due specie]
