Vegetable production in Umbria during the last fifty years

English. Despite its potential, Umbrian vegetable production still plays a limited role in the agriculture of the region for many reasons. The continental climate, characterised by cold wet Spring weather, is stressful to young developing plants. In addition, the heavy textured, low organic matter soils are challenging for producers unfamiliar with vegetable production. Finally, the limited average size of the farms and the lack of companies and infrastructures to sell the products (particularly in the past) have limited the potential for growth in the region. During the last 50 years, the species grown in the region have changed: faba bean and French bean have been replaced by sweet pepper, melon, tomato, spinach and cauliflower. Besides, organic and typical horticulture have been growing in the last years, although they still cover a small market sector; a product identity is still needed to better present the final product, in order to get higher prices. The future of vegetable production will depend on the growers ability and choices, the possibility to create their associations and new markets; the European agricultural policy will also play a fundamental role in promoting the horticulture of Umbria
Show more [+] Less [-]Italian. Il settore orticolo umbro, pur non rivestendo un'importanza primaria nel panorama agricolo regionale, ha notevoli possibilita' di sviluppo. Negli ultimi cinquant'anni il settore ha subito importanti modifiche, con la quasi scomparsa di alcune coltivazioni, quali fava e fagiolino, e un'accentuata espansione di superfici coltivate a pomodoro, peperone, spinacio, melone e cavolfiore. Le coltivazioni di ortaggi biologici e di nicchia, pur ricoprendo superfici aziendali minime, stanno assumendo sempre maggiore importanza sul mercato e interesse da parte di operatori; e' ancora viva l'esigenza di identita' del prodotto, per una migliore presentazione, al fine di spuntare prezzi piu' elevati. Il futuro della produzione orticola dipendera' dalla capacita' e dalle scelte degli agricoltori, dalla possibilita' di sviluppare l'associazionismo e di trovare nuovi mercati; anche la politica agricola europea giochera' un ruolo fondamentale nella promozione del settore orticolo in Umbria
