On the sanitary improvement of grapevine in Sardinia [Vitis vinifera L.]

In this work, the results are reported of the assessment of the sanitary status of the valuable red-berry grapevine cv Cagnulari and the white-berry cvs Malvasia di Sardegna and Vernaccia di Oristano, which are grown in specific areas of Sardinia. Investigations were finalized to ascertain the occurrence and incidence of the most frequent viral species. In particular, GFLV, GVA, GLRaV-l, GLRaV-3 and GFkV for all three varieties, and GLRaV-2 for cv Malvasia only. About 2,500 plants were tested by ELISA. The results showed that, whereas the sanitary status of cvs Malvasia and Vernaccia is much deteriorated, the overall conditions of cv Cagnulari are much more satisfactory. In the two white-berry varieties, infection rates by the different viruses were, in the order: GFkV 95 and 83%; GLRaV-3 71 and 56%; GVA 53 and 62%; GLRaV-l 28 and 29%; GFLV 8 and 4%. By contrast, infection rates by GFkV and GFLV in cv Cagnulari were 25 and 19%, respectively, other viruses having a very low incidence. Multiple infections were quite frequent in cvs Malvasia and Vernaccia, with 86 and 73%, respectively. Based on the results of this survey, it can be concluded that cvs Vernaccia and Malvasia definitely require interventions aimed at improving their sanitary conditions. However, while waiting for the outcome of sanitation treatments now underway, clonal selections of these varieties infected only by GFkV may be used for propagation

In questo lavoro sono riportati i risultati di un'indagine sulla situazione sanitaria di tre vitigni di pregio, Cagnulari (a bacca rossa), Malvasia di Sardegna e Vernaccia di Oristano (a bacca bianca), caratteristici di alcune zone viticole della Sardegna. Le ricerche sono state indirizzate all'accertamento delle piu' frequenti specie virali: GFLV, GVA, GLRaV-l, GLRaV-3, GFkV, e GLRaV-2 per la sola Malvasia. Sono stati sottoposti a saggi ELISA circa 2.500 campioni. I risultati indicano, nei confronti delle cultivar bianche, uno stato sanitario altamente precario, ma eccezionalmente favorevole per il Cagnulari. In Malvasia e Vernaccia le entita' virali piu' frequenti sono state: GFkV con 95 e 83%, GLRaV-3 con 71 e 56%, GVA con 53 e 62%, GLRaV-l con 28 e 29% e, infine, GFLV col solo 8 e 4%. Al contrario, il Cagnulari ha espresso le sue percentuali piu' alte con GFkV al 25% e con GFLV al 19%. Nella Malvasia e nella Vernaccia i dati relativi alle infezioni plurime incidono per l'86 e il 73%, rispettivamente. I risultati globali riguardanti i due vitigni bianchi suggeriscono la necessita' di interventi migliorativi, privilegiando le piante clone affette da solo GFkV, in attesa del loro recupero definitivo mediante il risanamento
