Results of winter pruning in the nursery of some ornamental species

English. In some ornamental shrubs and trees grown in pots, varying intensities of Winter pruning (light, moderate, severe) were applied. At the end of the growing period, plant height and shoot length and diameter were measured and new shoots were counted. Plants were also evaluated from a commercial point of view. Carpinus betulus and Osmanthus armatus gave the best results with moderate or light intensity of pruning. In other species, such as Photinia x fraseri Red Robin and Prunus cerasifera Nigra, severe or moderate intensity of pruning was needed to obtain a uniform and regular canopy. Severe pruning of Forsythia x intermedia yielded vigorous and flowering shoots and Tilia x europaea gave strong branches and a regularly shaped canopy
Show more [+] Less [-]Italian. Su alcuni arbusti e alberi ornamentali allevati in contenitore, prima della ripresa vegetativa, sono stati eseguiti interventi di potatura di tre diverse intensita'. Alla fine della crescita, sulle piante sono stati rilevati, l'altezza, la lunghezza, il diametro e il numero dei germogli. Le piante, inoltre, sono state valutate da un punto di vista commerciale. Carpinus betulus e Osmanthus armatus non devono essere potati eccessivamente per non compromettere l'armonico accrescimento dei germogli. Altre piante, come Photinia x fraseri Red Robin e Prunus cerasifera Nigra, devono essere sottoposte a una potatura di media-elevata intensita' per dare una conformazione uniforme e regolare alla chioma. In altre specie, come Forsythia x intermedia, la potatura corta favorisce un buon sviluppo di rami fioriferi o, in alberi quali Tilia x europaea, predispone la pianta a costituire branche robuste e conferisce alla chioma un aspetto tondeggiante
