Dēķena Dekena, Dzintra Dzintra
The collection of the Institute of Horticulture has approximately 90 different grape varieties and hybrids. For part of they had their first harvest in 2021. Grape harvest this year was full of challenges. If summer the months of June and July seemed favourable to the grapes, with sun and high air temperatures, then August was rich in rainfall. This year, the appearance of bunches for all varieties was spoiled by grey rot and wasps. Also spread in the grape plantations powdery mildew (Uncinula necator) and downy mildew (Plasmopara viticola). Despite this, some of the crops were successful save the Grape and Winemaker for the annual held for the grape exhibition "Latvijas vīnogas 2021", which this year it was held on September 11 in the yard of Bauska Palace. The Institute of Horticulture participated in it and exhibited 36 different varieties and hybrids, of which 9 were varieties of P. Sukatnieks and 22 hybrids from A. Fazekašs breeding. The table shows the quality assessment of the grape varieties created by P. Sukatnieks and G. Vēsmiņš in 2021 (scores 1–9, where 1 is the lowest value, 9 the highest value). This year for grapes, regardless of the hot ones in the months of June and July, the sugar content was low. Grapes need to be pruned in autumn to make it easier to cover them. Grapes are covered when frost sets in and the air temperature drops below 0 °С, but does not drop below by minus 5 °С. For the first years after planting, it is recommended to cover them all varieties, so that they do not freeze on the bare island, because the roots of the grapes are the most sensitive. In the Institute of Horticulture, the new grape plantation is covered by covering the root zone with leaves and bent shoots additionally with needles.
