Evaluation of pre-emergent herbicides for weed control in sweet potato. | Evaluación de herbicidas preemergentes para el control de arvenses en camote

English. Introduction. Inadequate weed management can reduce sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.) yield and in Costa Rica there are few publications that document chemical control alternatives in this crop. Objective. To identify effective pre-emergent herbicides for weed control and selective for sweet potato variety “Carrot”. Materials and methods. The experiment was conducted from September to December 2019, at the Experiment Station Fabio Baudrit Moreno of the University of Costa Rica, Alajuela. Cuttings with 4 to 5 nodes of the “Carrot” sweet potato variety were used, at a density of 22 222 plants per hectare. Treatments were metribuzin 0.6 kg ai per ha, pendimethalin 1.5 kg ai per ha, clomazone 0.48 kg ai per ha, metribuzin 0.6 kg ai per ha + pendimethalin 1.5 kg ai per ha, and metribuzin 0.6 kg ai per ha + clomazone 0.48 kg ai per ha, all applied 5 days after transplant and before emerging of weeds. A control was also used with weeding at 20 and 40 days after sowing, and another with free growth of weeds. A randomized complete block experimental design with 7 treatments and 4 replications was used. Results. Metribuzin + clomazone mixture was the most effective chemical treatment, since at 75 days after application it still presented the highest weed control (broadleaf 93%, poaceae 95%, Commelinaceae 100%) with only 4% weed coverage, and a commercial yield of 13.5 t per ha. Statistically the metribuzin + clomazone mixture presented a commercial yield equal to the control with weeding (14.1 t per ha). Metribuzin caused slight damage to sweet potato plants, but they recovered at 15 days after application. The presence of weeds during the crop cycle reduced the yield of marketable sweet potatoes by 89%. Conclusion. The best chemical alternative for weed management and production of marketable sweet potatoes was metribuzin + clomazone. Keywords: Weeds; competition; herbicides; Ipomoea batatas; yield.

Spanish; Castilian. Introducción. Un manejo inadecuado de las arvenses puede disminuir el rendimiento del camote (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.) y en Costa Rica son escasas las publicaciones que documenten alternativas de control químico en este cultivo. Objetivo. Identificar herbicidas preemergentes efectivos en el control de las arvenses y selectivos al camote variedad Zanahoria. Materiales y métodos. El experimento se realizó de setiembre a diciembre de 2019 en la Estación Experimental Fabio Baudrit de la Universidad de Costa Rica, Alajuela. Se utilizaron esquejes de 4 a 5 nudos de la variedad de camote Zanahoria, a una densidad de 22 222 plantas por hectárea. Los tratamientos fueron metribuzin 0,6 kg ia.ha-1, pendimetalina 1,5 kg ia.ha-1, clomazone 0,48 kg ia.ha-1, metribuzin 0,6 kg ia.ha-1 + pendimetalina 1,5 kg ia.ha-1, y metribuzin 0,6 kg ia.ha-1 + clomazone 0,48 kg ia.ha-1, aplicados 5 días después del trasplante y en preemergencia de las arvenses. Se consideró además un testigo con deshierba a los 20 y 40 días después de la siembra, y otro con libre crecimiento de arvenses. Se utilizó un diseño experimental de bloques completos al azar, con 7 tratamientos y 4 repeticiones. Resultados. La mezcla metribuzin + clomazone fue el tratamiento químico más eficaz, ya que aún 75 días después de la aplicación presentó un control de arvenses de hoja ancha de 93%, poáceas de 95% y Commelinaceae del 100%, con solo un 4% de cobertura de arvenses y un rendimiento comercial de 13,5 t.ha-1. Estadísticamente la mezcla metribuzin + clomazone presentó un rendimiento comercial igual al testigo con deshierbas (14,1 t.ha-1). El metribuzin causó daños leves en las plantas de camote, pero estas se recuperaron a los 15 días después de la aplicación. La presencia de arvenses durante el ciclo del cultivo redujo en 89% el rendimiento de camotes comercializables. Conclusión. La mejor alternativa química para el manejo de las arvenses y la producción de camotes comercializables fue metribuzin + clomazone.
