Effect of liming on the establishment and early growth of a grass/legume mixture grown under coconut

Dry matter production of the grass/legume mixture and weeds was recorded over a period of two years. The establishment of the mixture was significantly better in the limed plots. But there was no marked difference between the levels. Dry matter production per hectare (ha) of both the grass and the legume showed a significant quadratic response, with the maximum dry matter yields at 20 m.t per ha and 16 m.t per ha during the first year and second year, respectively. Dry matter production in both grass and legumes with 6 m.t per ha was significantly higher than that at control. Available phosphorus in soil followed a pattern similar to that of dry matter production. Dry matter yields of weeds decreased progressively with increasing rate of lime up to 16 m.t per ha and thereafter increased. Soil pH in the limed plots, at the end of the experimental period was recorded approximately 6.0
