In this preliminary study, wood flour (WF) filled polypropylene (PP) composites of constant filer content (30% by weight) were compounded using a twin screw extruder. A commercial maleated polypropylene (MAPP) compatibilizer was added directly into the mixture of PP/WF during the compounding process in order to increase the interfacial adhesion with the PP matrix. Three types of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) flame retardants viz. AP 750, FR Cros 484 and FR Cros 486 were used to study their effect on the mechanical properties of the composites. The experimental results demonstrated that MAPP enhanced tensile and flexural strength of PP/WF composites. SEM study revealed that there was an improvement in interfacial bonding between PP and WF which lead to the improvement in tensile and flexural strength of the composites.
