Fertility status of some major soil types in Felda Sahabat, Umas and Kalabakan, Sabah [Malaysia]
1996
Sinnasamy, N.
Soil fertility plays an important role besides climatic condition and topography to achieve high FFB yields. The soils in FELDA Sabah are derived from volcanic rocks, mudstone/sandstone associations, coral and sand deposits. They are younger in formation compared to soils of peninsula and rare therefore more fertile. There are seven major soil types in FELDA Sabah with diverse physical and chemical properties. In general, the soils in Sahabat complex are very high in calcium content but low in potassium and magnesium. This high variation creates an imbalance in palm nutrient uptake which subsequently affects palm performance. As such, these soils have to be viewed carefully when giving fertilizer recommendations.
