Krekling (Empetrum nigrum) sin påverknad på mortalitet og rekruttering på tre i tregrenseøkotonen

Klimaet er i endring, noko som vil påverka veksten, samansetninga og utbreiinga til vegetasjonen. Mange studiar har synt at det er i tregrenseøkotonen slike endringar vil vera tydelegast. Ulike studiar syner at krekling (Empetrum nigrum) har allelopatiske eigenskapar som gjer krekling sterkare i konkurranse med andre artar. Forsking har synt at det er temperatur som styrer utviklinga i tregrensa, men konkurranse artane i mellom er òg styrande for utviklinga. Problemstillinga for denne masteroppgåva var: «Kan krekling og annan vegetasjon påverka rekruttering og mortalitet til trea i tregrenseøkotonen?» Det blei gjort tre- og vegetasjonsregistreringar fordelt på 36 lokalitetar i Noreg. Lokalitetane ligg på eit 1500 km langt transekt, som strekker seg frå Agder i sør til Senja i nord. Treregistreringar blei gjort i 2008 og i 2018 blei det gjort både tre- og vegetasjonsregistreringar. For å finne ut om krekling og andre vegetasjonsvariablar hadde ein innverknad, gjorde me statistisk modellering. Målet er å finna dei forklaringsvariablane som forklarer mortalitet og rekruttering. For å sjå på samanhengen mellom forklarings- og responsvariablar har eg nytta generaliserte lineære modellar (GLM) med Gaussisk fordeling for mortalitet og negativ-bionomiell for rekruttering. Det har blitt fleire tre i tregrenseøkotonen sidan 2008. Resultata mine synte at krekling har ein positiv påverknad på overlevinga til trea og inga påverknad på rekrutteringa. Eg fann ein samanheng mellom tal artar og krekling, noko som kan bety ein mogleg allelopatisk påverknad. Eg fann at jorddjupn hadde ein negativ påverknad på overlevinga og at vegetasjonshøgd hadde ein negativ påverknad på rekrutteringa. At vegetasjonshøgd fekk ein negativ påverknad kan skuldast tett og høg vegetasjon gjer da vanskeleg for eit frø å kome til. Det var eit lågt gjennomsnittleg kreklingdekke i studien min, det kan vera noko av årsaka til eg ikkje finn samanheng mellom rekruttering og krekling. Røsslyng (Calluna vulgaris) hadde ein negativ påverknad på rekruttering som kan henga saman med mengd strø det produsere. For å vidare styrka kunnskapsgrunnlaget om endringane i tregrenseøkotonen vil det vera viktig å halda fram med tre- og vegetasjonsregistreringane.

The climate is changing, something that may affect the growth, composition and distribution of vegetation in an ecosystem. Many studies have shown that in the treeline ecotone such changes will be most obvious. Various studies show that crowberries (Empetrum nigrum) have allelopathic properties that can make it stronger in competition with other species. Research has shown that temperature controls the treeline dynamics, but perhaps competition between the species has an effect. My question in this study was: “can crowberry and other vegetation affect tree recruitment and mortality in the treeline ecotone?" In this study, tree and vegetation observations were recorded at 36 sites along a 1500 km long transect in Norway. Tree registrations were carried out in 2008 and 2018 and for vegetation this was done in 2018. To find out if crowberry and other vegetation variables could explain patterns in tree recruitment and mortality, I used statistical modelling. This was done by modelling the relationships using generalized linear models (GLMs), where Gaussian distribution was chosen as the distribution model for mortality and negative-binomial for recruitment. More trees were observed in the treeline ecotone in 2018 than 2008. Crowberry was found to have a positive relationship on the survival of trees but had no significant relationship with recruitment. Crowberry also had a significant negative relationship with number of species, suggesting a possible allelopathic affect form crowberry on other species. I found that soil depth had a negative impact on survival and that vegetation height had a negative impact on recruitment. The fact that vegetation height has a negative impact can be because of the dense and high vegetation makes it difficult for a seed to reach bare ground. It was a low average crowberry cover in my study, maybe that is the reason I could not find any connection between recruitment and crowberry. Heather (Calluna vulgaris) had a negative impact that could be related to the amount of litter it produces. To increase the knowledge about treeline dynamics, it will be important to continue with the tree and vegetation records to create a long-term dataset.
