Meaningful consultation and participation in the mining sector? : a review of the consultation and participation of indigenous peoples within the international mining sector

Mining companies and governments control a development agenda that favours open markets and the liberalization of mining laws. The meaningful participation of Indigenous peoples at consultation and decision-making levels of natural resources management, requires the right to prior informed consent. Conflict arises as Indigenous peoples attempt to resist the injustices of social and environmental impacts of mining through greater participation in natural resources development. In addition, the role of national governments in natural resources development has decreased, leaving the private sector in greater control of impacts on Indigenous peoples’ lands, with unrecognized impacts on women and girls.
