Magic plus a useful resource for mapping agronomic, yield and iron and zinc biofortification traits

Improving the nutritional quality of rice is a major priority in rice improvement programs. The development of rice genotypes with micronutrient-dense grains requires an understanding of the genetic basis of these traits. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) were conducted using a Multi-parent Advanced Generation Inter-Cross (MAGIC) Plus population developed at IRRI, GWAS revealed 35 QTLs associated (p greater or equal to 0.001) with 12 agronomic, yield, and Fe and Zn biofortification traits from field experiments. A total of 4 QTLs and 5 QTLs were associated with grain Fe and Zn concentration, respectively, across two seasons. Several QTLs for days to flowering, plant height, grain length, grain width, and grain Zn were identified during the two growing seasons. For the agronomic traits, the associated SNP markers were found to co-locate with major genes and QTLs previously reported. A number of metal homeostosis genes near associated QTLs, primarily OsNAS3, were identified that could underline grain Fe and Zn concentration. The marker-trait relationships from Bayesian network analysis showed consistency with the results of GWAS. Results indicate the usefulness of this population as a mapping resource for grain Fe and Zn concentration.
