Growth and nutritional status of Hopea odorata planted for urban landscape

Hopea odorata is suitable to be planted outside their natural habitat, thrive well in harsh urban environment and is a popular urban landscape and shade tree. A study was conducted on the growth and nutritional status of five years old Hopea odorata planted at the New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE) for landscape purposes. Parameters recorded were total tree height, stem diameter at breast height (dbh), relative leaf chlorophyll content and foliar nutrient content. A portable chlorophyll meter, SPAD 502, was used to measure leaf chlorophyll content and fully developed leaves were sampled for foliar nutrient analysis. Analysis of variance using SAS was carried out to compare the means of the various parameters measured. Significant differences in height and diameter were observed between two locations. Mean total height and dbh of H. odorata planted on original soil were 8.28 m and 13.72 cm respectively whilst the values were 6.8 m and 11.44 cm for cut soil. Similarly, significant differences were seen in relative leaf chlorophyll content and foliar nitrogen (N) with trees planted on original soil contained higher foliar N content and gave higher SPAD value for chlorophyll content. H. odorata seems to grow on a wide variety of soils but it’s growth at NKVE varies significantly with soil condition. H. odorata can be considered as sitesensitive and perform considerably well on undisturbed soil. Nevertheless, it is a hardy species and can survive on marginal site such as on compacted and cut soil.
