Secuestro de carbono y uso de agua en sistemas silvopastoriles con especies maderables nativas en el trópico seco de Costa Rica

El objetivo de este estudio fue cuantificar el papel de las especies maderables nativas y de pasturas en el secuestro de carbono y en el uso de agua en sistemas silvopastoriles en el trópico seco. El estudio se realizó en la hacienda la Pacífica en Cañas, Guanacaste. En conclusión, aunque no existieron diferencias significativas (P menor que 0.05) para el almacenamiento de carbono total en los sistemas silvopastoriles evaluados, los resultados los muestran como promisorios para el secuestro de carbono y las especies maderables nativas utilizadas presentan valores de eficiencia de uso de agua que las hacen útiles para su utilización en sistemas silvopastoriles en el trópico seco. The objective of this study was to quantifying the role of native and pasture timber tree species in carbon sequestration and water use in the silvopastoral systems in the dry tropics. The study was carried out at Hacienda La pacífica located in Cañas, Guanacaste at 50 masl, with an annual average precipitation of 1500 mm, 26°C average temperatures and 70 per cent annual average relative humidity. There were no statistical differences in soil carbon sequestration (p mayor that 0.05) but 55 per cent of this sequestration was located at the first 20 cm depth. Transpiration values were higher in guachipelín with 1,5 mm/day exponent-1 and the lower were for cenizaro with 0,27 mm/day exponent-1 In conclusion, the carbon content was similar in all the silvopastoral systems evaluated but they are highly promising to sequestrate carbon and to use water efficiently if established in the dry tropics.
