Tartrazine is a stable water-soluble azo dye widely used as a food additive that could pose potential threats to humans and the environment. In this work, the catalytic destruction ability of the food dye Tartrazine was tested by catalytic ozonation process using two catalysts K10montmorillonite (K10) and chemically modified K10-montmorillonite (AF-K10). Clay-catalyzed reactions are strongly dependent on reactant adsorption, which in turn should depend on acid-base, electrostatic and hydrophilic-organophilic interactions. The basicity of the clay catalyst surface is expected to favour interactions with the acid groups of the organic molecule under study. The interactions involved in adsorption are determined by the pKa values of each group in each organic molecule.
