The study of allelopathic interactions from the agricultural aspect primarily involves examining the allelopathic influence of weeds on crops, because the effects of allelopathy in plant production are of great importance in order to prevent yield reductions due to negative effects of wild plant allelochemicals on cultivated plants. Accordingly, it is important to establish allelopathic relationships between plants. The aim of this study was to examine the allelopathic effect of ragweed on the phenolics content (total flavonoids and total anthocyanins content) and the antioxidant potential of sunflower in three different ratios of the mentioned weed and cultivated plant (ragweed:sunflower 3:1, 1:1, 1:3) to examine the susceptibility of a cultivated plant to ragweed depending on the number of weeds in the environment. The control treatment is sunflower plants without ragweed in the environment. The results indicate that accumulation of phenolic compounds in sunflower leaves can be interpreted as a plant response to stress caused by allelochemicals released by ragweed.
