Determination of Oil Point Pressure of Sesame Seeds Using Oil Yield Versus Applied Pressure Model

PURPOSE: Oil point pressure is the minimum pressure applied to force oil out of oil-bearing material and, therefore, identification of oil point pressure is important to design and operate mechanical oil expression devices. Oil point pressure determinations reported in the past literature depended upon visual detection of the first drop of oil leaving the seed bed under applied pressure, which were both subjective and laborious. An alternative method to overcome the said shortcomings is proposed in this study. METHODS: Oil point pressure of sesame seeds was determined by developing an empirical mathematical model between oil yield and applied pressure with five unknown parameters, one of which was oil point pressure. An experimental unit consisted of a mortar with drain holes at its base and a tight-fitting pestle was used to collect data on oil yields at various applied pressures higher than the oil point pressure. Collected data were used to determine the five unknown parameters using non-linear optimization methodology. RESULTS: Oil point pressures were estimated at 2.1 and 3.2 MPa for Uma and Landrace sesame seeds, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Determination of oil point pressure from an empirical mathematical model using experimental data obtained in a wide range of applied pressures higher than the oil point pressure is a novel approach successfully introduced in this study. One of the noteworthy gains of the aforementioned methodology is that the empirical mathematical model developed in this study has the advantage of being applicable to estimate oil yields at chosen applied pressures, as validated against experimental data available in the past literature.
