Abstract: Important facts and considerations in making the decision of whether or not to smoke are presented in this easy-to-understand health booklet. Health hazards associated with smoking, such as lung cancer and premature death, are discussed. Descriptions are provided of several types of smoker personalities (i.e. addict, habit, nervous fiddler, pleasure-seeker, pep-craver). Eight good reasons not to smoke are outlined. Physiological effects of cigarette smoke on the lungs are described. The functions are possible benefits of cigarette filters are examined. Specific guidelines are provided for developing the motivation to quit smoking and stick with the decision. The effects of cigarette smoking on others (i.e. children, family) and the potential habit forming consequences of smoking are considered. (aje).
