Abstract: Observations on the quality of home life and the degree of encouragement that parents and siblings provided to school children in their families are analyzed in detail for educators, urban anthropologists, and social workers, based upon interviews conducted with 10 Black families living in Chicago. The families ranged from well-to-do to welfare recipients, and included both 1- and 2- parent homes as well as high and low achievers. The relative importance of a number of factors (the academic development of authority and attachment, time utilization, learning rituals practiced in the homes, individual goals and expectations, and dealings with family, friends, schools, and the community) are considered, relative to school achievement of the school children. The conclusions of these surveys provide key implications for educational policy and offer specific suggestions and strategies for families and educators in improving school survival skills in Black school children.
