Calcium
1984
Abstract: The most current research on calcium (Ca) and diseases associated with chronic Ca deficiency is reviewed to aid health professionals in more effectively counseling their clients by addressing misconceptions concerning Ca and health. Topics include an overview of the major functions of Ca in the human body; Ca needs and recommended allowances for the various major life stages (infancy through elderly, including pregnancy, lactation, and menopause); factors other than age that affect Ca utilization (e.g.: other nutrients; special diets or medications; disease; physical activity); Ca-deficiency diseases and their treatment and prevention; and common patient factors of concern to the health professional (e.g.: lactose intolerance, kidney stones, vegetarian diets, hypertension). A tabulation of the Ca content of portions of a wide variety of foods is appended. (wz).
