Estimated economic effects of added growing season rainfall in North Dakota

Extract: The state was divided into four farming areas to focus the examination of possible effects of added growing season rainfall. Each area was studied as one large farm. A mathematical program called a linear programming model was used to determine the most profitable farm plan for each area under normal rainfall conditions and then again with added growing season rainfall. Results indicated no major shifts in types of crops of livestock enterprises with added rainfall. A minimum acreage of summer fallow was required, and this minimum held under both normal and added growing season rainfall. The increased returns with added growing season rainfall came from greater crop and for age yields.
