"The recognition and study of large molecules has been one of the great developments in chemistry in the last 30 years. In biochemistry the size and importance of proteins and nucleic acids having been recognized, their study by physico-chemical methods has continuously increased. The failure of classical methods of molecular weight determination when applied to macromolecules was one of the main obstacles to the recognition of their true size. Once the existance of large molecules had been recognized the need for new methods of molecular weight became apparent. Parallel with this growth of interest in large molecules, a variety of techniques have therefore been developed for the study of these parameters. The range and scope of each of these is here briefly summarized to show the place of light-scattering, the latest of these developments" - introduction.
