Chromium in nutrition and metabolism
1979
Shapcott, D. | Hubert, J (Joseph)
Abstract: The historical progress, the present status, and the future needs of chromium research are addressed in 22 papers presented at a symposium. Since the discovery of the role of chromium in glucose tolerance factor (GTF) activity in 1958, progress has been made in defining its metabolism, mode of action, human requirements and diagnosis of nutritional status. The papers cover such topics as measurement techniques and standard reference materials; neutron activation analyses; requirements in parenteral nutrition; chromium and glucose metabolism in children and adults; and the association of biologically active chromium and adipocytes. Other reports assess the influence of brewer's yeast on lipoprotein cholesterol, the association of hair chromium content and arteriosclerosis, and therapeutic responses to chromium in juvenile and maturity onset diabetes. Future research focus is suggested on the structure and function of GTF, endogenous synthesis and absorption of GTF, analysis of chromium compounds, nutritional assessment and the long-term effects of marginal deficiency.
