Abstract: A case against sugar is presented to encourage consumers to limit their intakes. The process of refining natural beet or cane sugar to white sugar (99.96% sucrose) removes all nutrients. Sugar is used and abused in the American diet. Principles of glucose metabolism and its regulation are described. The causes, symptoms, and treatment of hypoglycemia are examined; 19 other disorders associated with sugar consumption are listed. Tips for breaking the sweet tooth habit include reading labels, using natural sweeteners (honey, molasses, fruit juices), and learning to enjoy less-sweet foods. A visual display illustrates the sugar content of 10 food items; these include 12 oz. of Coke (5-6 tsp.), 1 doughnut (4 tsp.), 1 chocolate bar (7 tsp.), and 1/2 cup of ice cream (5-6 tsp.). (nm).
