Extract: Dispersed energy systems that rely on natural energy forces such as solar and wind power are viewed as possible alternatives to replace conventional fossil fuels. The author argues that evaluations of dispersed systems must consider the impact on auxiliary energy sources such as electric utilities that supply power to dispersed system users during slack periods. A model that combines both technical and economic measures of efficiency is presented to evaluate the effects of intermittent dispersed system production on community welfare. The results of a case study of solar domestic water heating in Florida are also discussed.
