Beaver protection, management, and utilization in Europe and North America
1999
Busher, Peter E. | Dzie̦ciolowski, Ryszard
From a symposium of the Euro-American Mammal Congress, held in July 1998 at Santiago De Compostella, Spain, 17 papers describe conservation programs now that the two extant species of beaver are no longer endangered and have repopulated to the point that they conflict with human land use by modifying the local environment. They also describe how the animals practice natural reconciliation ecology and consider how humans might learn a few things from them about coexisting with wildlife. The topics include reintroducing Castor fiber in the Netherlands, beaver management in the Baltic states, beavers in urban landscapes in the Greater Bratislava area, and understanding North American beaver behavior as an aid to management.
