L' agriculture péri-urbaine à Siem Reap, Cambodge | Peri-urban agriculture at Siem Reap (Cambodia)

This research into "Peri-urban Agriculture in Siem Reap" was carried out by an ICRA research team at the request of Agrisud. Two types of information were collected: qualitative, through interviews with key informants and PRAs; snd quantitative, through a survey of 126 farmers in 6 villages. The results show that farm sizes are small and the farming systems are based on rice associated with other food crops, market gardening and livestock. At present the absence of land titles is not a hindrance to investment in agriculture. However, the farmers remain vulnerable in the face of the urbanisation that threatens to usurp their land. Moreover, the irrigation systems and diverse water sources in Siem Reap Province are insufficient for agricultural needs. Due to the shortcomings of government institutions resulting from the war, the insufficiency of technical support and the lack of coordination amongst the multiple NGOs and international organisations, existing programmes have not managed to resolve the problems of hydrology and land tenure. Agrisud currently assists farmers to diversify their agricultural production, particularly in the fields of market gardening and livestock, to meet the demands of urban markets. The team proposes that Agrisud adopt a strategy of village-level intervention, in consultation with other actors, to take up the challenge of peri-urban agricultural development.
