This study presents a caracterisation and an analysis of the farming systems of three mountainous areas in the Moroccan Middle Atlas. The farming systems have been analysed, using the following central theme: "the integration of crops - livestock - forests and its repercussions on the use and management of natural resources". Several participatory research methods have been applied by a multidisciplinary team of five scientists. The methods helped to identify the constraints, advantages and potentials of the farming systems in the area and to understand their evolution. They also served as a tool to establish potential main research program areas on a national level and some proposals for concrete development oriented research projects in the study area, with the participation of all actors (farmers, scientists, extension services and rural county boards). Specific recommendations are proposed in the present study, focused at general development activities, at development-oriented agricultural research projects in order to increase animal and crop production, and at improving the management of natural resources. The recommendations are directed towards the establishment and the implementation of a national research programme for the mountainous areas.
