The hungry planet
1972
Borgström, Georg
Abstract: The view is presented, with supportive data, that the human race is threatening its future through its unabated population growth and its ineffective use of nutritive resources. This view is compounded by the observation that, despite significant monetary commitments, scientific and technological advances and governmental and international efforts, 1.5 billion of the Earth's inhabitants are undernourished and an additional billion are deficient in 1 or more key nutrients. Various aspects of this problem and their causes are discussed under 21 topic areas with supplemented graphics and literature references. The topic areas address characteristics of the hunger gap, the problems of specific regions (India, Africa, Asia, Japan), and possible sources of relief (e.g., cultivation of the sea, new foods, Western food surpluses) and their limitations.
